Community Issues

More interesting stuff today.

We spent the morning at the Hay River Community Counselling Centre talking with the counsellors about what they are doing and what they could add to their community to make things better.

Like most agencies they are dealing with more people than they have the resources to deal with, They have a beautiful facility and a great staff but there is a lot to do. Much of the discussion centred around what to do at a community level to make things better.

The issue here is the same as anywhere else, people, for the most part, don’t want to be identified as having a problem with Drug or Alcohol, there is still the stigma that some how this makes you “less”. It isn’t true but if that is what you are thinking then your thinking will affect your actions and your feelings.

The issue then becomes one of helping change how people think. there was a suggestion that the creative writes and producers that make alcohol advertising should also have to make equally compelling ads for the other side “It OK to be Sober and its OK to get Help”

There is a lot of strength in this community and this agency has many people who can be a huge help.

What do you think?
